Q&A – What to Expect

In March, Ghana is transitioning from the dry season to the start of the rainy season. You can expect warm and humid weather, with daytime temperatures averaging between 85°F and 95°F (29°C to 35°C), especially in the southern and coastal regions like Accra and Elmina. Evenings are generally cooler but still warm. Rainfall is light during this time, but occasional showers may occur, so it’s best to pack a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella.

Light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton is ideal. Modest clothing is recommended, especially when visiting schools and interacting with communities. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as we’ll be moving around schools and historical sites like Elmina Castle. Closed-toe shoes with good support or sturdy sandals are ideal for walking on uneven terrain. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will be essential for sun protection.

We will have a private bus to transport us between destinations in Ghana, offering convenience and comfort. Additionally, for our trip to Kumasi, we will take a local flight from Accra to save time and ensure a smooth journey. Our private bus will also be available in Kumasi for transportation throughout our stay there.

We’ve arranged a concierge service to and from the airport for your arrival and departure. This includes a warm welcome at Kotoka International Airport in Accra and seamless transport to our accommodation. Our concierge will also assist with luggage, customs, and any questions you may have.

Our mission focuses on empowering young girls and women through education. We will visit local schools in both Accra and Kumasi, where we will work with young girls and women, facilitating workshops, distributing books, and engaging in meaningful mentorship. Your involvement will make a direct impact by providing educational resources and encouraging the students to pursue their goals.

The schools we’ll visit are excited to welcome us. You can expect lively classrooms, eager students, and opportunities to lead or support activities focused on literacy, leadership, and empowerment. You might want to bring comfortable, casual clothing suitable for active work with children and school settings, such as polo shirts or light blouses, paired with modest skirts or slacks.

In addition to the mission work, we will visit some of Ghana’s most important cultural and historical landmarks. A key highlight will be the Elmina Castle, located along the coast, which was a major hub during the transatlantic slave trade. This visit will offer a profound historical experience as we explore its rich yet tragic past. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there will be walking tours through the castle grounds.

Elmina Castle is a significant historical site with some uneven and cobbled areas, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. It can also get warm, so bring a hat, water bottle, and sunscreen. Cameras are allowed, but be mindful of the solemn nature of the site, especially in certain areas.

Yes, we’ve designed the itinerary to allow for a balanced experience. After working in the schools and visiting historical sites, you will have free time to rest and reflect. Our accommodations will provide a comfortable space to recharge, and the concierge service will ensure that your needs are taken care of.

You will have the opportunity to experience a variety of Ghanaian dishes, including jollof rice, grilled tilapia, and plantains. We’ll ensure that clean, bottled water is readily available, and the food will be prepared hygienically at all times. If you have specific dietary needs or preferences, please let us know in advance.

Ghanaians are known for their hospitality, and you’ll find that greeting people warmly and showing respect, especially to elders, goes a long way. When visiting the schools, engage with the students openly, listen attentively, and offer encouragement. A small gesture, like learning a few phrases in the local language (such as “medaase” for “thank you” in Twi), can make a big difference.

Ghana has a rich cultural heritage with diverse traditions. Respecting local customs, dressing modestly, and being open to learning about different cultural practices will enhance your experience. Ghanaians place great emphasis on community and hospitality, so don’t be surprised if you’re invited to share a meal or engage in lively conversation.

Ghana’s currency is the Ghanaian cedi (GHS). You can exchange US dollars at forex bureaus or withdraw cash from ATMs in major cities like Accra and Kumasi. Credit cards are accepted in some places, but it’s advisable to carry cash for smaller purchases, especially in local markets or rural areas.

The local flight to Kumasi is short, around 45 minutes, and offers a convenient way to travel between Accra and one of Ghana’s most important cultural hubs. Kumasi is home to the Ashanti Kingdom, and the flight will save us valuable time to allow more engagement in our mission work.
